The location couldn't be any better. After 20 years away from Salvador, I had only one day to enjoy the city before catching a flight back to the States. I doubt that I would be any happier in a 5 stars hotel. Unpretentious, extremely friendly and relaxing as it can get. I was blown away by the level of hospitality and attention. The guy who checked me in made sure I had all the information that I needed and was well accommodated. They even had a beautiful breakfast table set just for me 2 hours before regular breakfast time, so I could eat before heading to the airport for my early flight. The place is located just steps away from the beach, where I had the best "Caldo de Sururu" ever made at a local "cabana" on the beach, right behind the "Museu do Forte". Don't forget to check out the "Acarajometro" right in front of the "Forte". The acaraje was amazing! Whenever I go back to Salvador, that's where I am going to stay! By the way, a cab ride from the airport will cost you about $80 to $120 reais. Call Marcelo, the cab driver that I used from the Pousada to the airport in the morning. He charged $50 reais only and probably can get you a deal too! +55 71 8774-2157/ +55 71 8273-3713. Thank you for a wonderful time and the best night of sleep in weeks!

  • Estrela do Mar

This Pousada is located at the Farol da Barra district, which is the one I like the most in Salvador. The neighborhood although mostly residential and quiet offers a great deal of shops and nice restaurants and bars just a few steps away from the Pousada. The Pousada is a rebuild house with a very familiar aspect. The bathrooms could use a little work, but depending on which room you are at (not close to the kitchen or on the ground floor), it is quiet and spaceous. The only thing I lacked was the availability of a phone in the room. There is a mobile phone available at the recepcion for local calls only (free of charge), which seems a way to work around this issue, although I would prefer to call freely and be charged for it.
The staff was very kind, professional and hands-on.
The Pousada accepts payments throug paypal.

Stayed here with 2 friends for 4 nights. All the staff here are really lovely and helpful.
The breakfasts are delicious and interesting. A great little pousada. We had a large room for the 3 of us. Huge bathroom, basic but clean. That's all you need. Pousada lovely, cosy and felt like our home for the 4 nights we were there.
Definitely the best location. Walking distance to 2 beaches. We also tried the grilled hallumi style cheese on the beach and some delicious crab meals in the evening at a local restaurant.

As long as you follow the rules not to stay out late , dress down and don't flash your cash/cameras, we felt absolutely safe.
We visted Pelourinho and were glad we chose not to stay there. Barra is definitely the best area to stay in. You can take a short bus ride to Pelourinho if you want to visit for a day, that's all you need there.

I highly recommend this quaint hotel in Salvador Bahia, especially if you are looking to stay somewhere that feels safe and is very near to restaurants and the great beaches in Barra (the locals beach-Farol da Barra is less than 5mins away, and Porto da Barra, which is great for swimming, is less than 10mins away). The hotel price is also great compared to the generally expensive hotels prices that I found in Salvador. The bus stop is a 2mins walk away if you fancy venturing further (there are direct buses to Pelhourinho).

The staff were fantastic and spoke basic English. Some spoke very well. They, including the Irish owner Sean, were very helpful and friendly and answered our multitude of questions and sorted out our airport transfers. I would recommend learning some basic Portuguese or at least to bring a dictionary or phasebook if travelling to Brazil though because the majority of locals do not speak English. However this added to our experience in a good way.

Our room was cosy and the beds were made every day and our towels changed. Our bathroom was big and easy to fit 3 females doing their makeup in the huge mirror! Breakfast every morning was worth getting up early for. It was fresh and included different fruit each day and a varied local dish.

If you are expecting the Hilton then you shouldn't stay here, but if you are looking for somewhere that feels like a little home from home then this is the place. We loved staying here and it was definately the best pousada of our trip in Brazil (we also went to Sao Paulo, Florianopolis and Camboriu).

Sean has established a quaint little Pousada with great service in a prime location. Just 2 minutes from the beaches of Barra, you couldnt stay in a better location. Previously, I stayed in Pelhourinho...the beautiful, historic area of Salvador.... but heh, I want to be near the beaches during the day and "the Pelo" is just a hop away by taxi. The Estrela is not the Ritz, but for this price it is a great deal with a very charming atmosphere.

We spent about a week here at the end of our Brazilian vacation. We had a big room on the ground floor. There was a hammock and a bench right outside our door. We'd leave for the day and come back to a freshly made bed and new towels. Breakfast was great--there was always something new to try every day (tapioca pancakes, corn cakes, plantains, etc) along with a different fruit. The staff was friendly and helpful. And the location was perfect if you like being in the middle of things. The beach is steps away and there are about twenty bars and restaurants within a five minute walking radius. One sunday night there was a guy with his own bamboo caipirinha-frutas stand about a half block away. Amazing to be able to buy a drink made with a fresh passionfruit right outside your door. Weekends could be a bit noisy, but thats why you choose Barra.

This was very nice little place! I went with my family (5 of us), all adults. I had my doubts after a few of the bad reviews (although most were exceptionally good), but this place was great. Here's a little summary of our stay:

-Grounds & Rooms: Quaint. Do not expect the Ritz, obviously. It's more like staying at your friends house. you get the basics, a tv (w/o cable), a/c and hot water. The pillow cases might not match, but everything was clean and tidy. This is a location more for travelers who are looking for a nice place to sleep and start a long day of sightseeing.

-Staff: Sean and the rest of the staff were exceptionally nice and accommodating. All the good things you read in the reviews are true! they helped us plan our trips around the city and gave great suggestions on where to eat. Sean also coordinated a discounted transfer ($R60 vs usual $R87) to and from the airport. He also helped us reserve our booking on the Catamaran to Morro de SP.

-Location: Barra was the best place to stay. First off, it is a very close and cheap taxi ride up to the Pelo (taxi stand 2 short blks away) and secondly it is a very safe area. There are quite a few restaurants and bars around the area, which we walked to and from very late at night. There are also several banks walking distance. Plus, you can just walk to the beach.

-Breakfast: very good. not the all you can eat buffets that you might get used to around Brazil, but it was very good. All the food was grown locally and was very fresh. I'm a big guy, and eat a lot, and I was full every morning. They had no problem giving me additional portions of everything.

Overall, it was great!

Without any doubt this is a great place to stay. I stayed here 2 times in one month. When I had to go back to Salvador, I did not doubt one second to return here. The breakfast is one of the best I got during my 1 month stay in Brazil. The rooms are lovely, very clean and quiet as well. Very friendly staff and willing to help whenever you have a question. Use the taxi they offer to arrange for you. It is indeed cheaper then when you take one from the airport yourself. However, to the airport, I paid less when calling a taxi on the street myself. This place gives very good quality for the money. It is good value. Further this pousada is located in a nice neigbourhood and just 2 blocks from beach and sea. Much better than the isolated Pelourinho where you may get bothered as a tourist about every other step.

My husband and I stayed at Pousada Estrela Do Mar for 4 nights in October 2008.
Firstly, the location of this pousada is great. A short stroll to the beach and to many of the bars and restaurants in Farol da Barra. There are also excellent, fast bus links to the Pelhourinho and other areas as well as plenty of taxis around.
The room itself was a decent size, clean and tastefully decorated. It had the best air conditioning we've ever had: you could set the exact temperature you wanted to achieve and best of all it was quiet! The only thing lacking from the room was a safe but the pousada itelf is secure so we just locked our belongings in our suitcase and never had any problems.
The staff at the pousada all spoke English which was a major advantage for us. Although we had a Portuguese phrase book we found things quite difficult in Salvador as it is rare to find English speakers to help you out and even if you do learn a few phrases it's not often easy to understand the reply!
The breakfasts at Pousada Estrela do Mar were easiest the best we've ever had. Rather than the usual buffet we had elsewhere in Brazil where food often goes cold, this pousada did table service. Every morning we were given fresh fruit (mango, pineapple, melon, papaya), bread rolls with butter and homemade jam, cheese, ham, eggs and a different Brazilian speciality every day (fried cheese, cake, etc.).
I would definitely stay in this pousada again if visiting Salvador as it was absolutely amazing for the price we paid.

Excellent place to stay. Nicely situated, clean rooms, wonderful service. The place felt very secure. Best breakfast on our whole holiday (3 weeks)! They even gave you a map of the area with recommendable restaurants, which we found very practical.

The only thing we regreted is that we only stayed for 1 night in this lovely place. I absolutely recommend!
